Scottish darts witnessed a truly historic moment at the WDF World Championships, held at the iconic Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, as 15-year-old Mitchell Lawrie delivered one of the most extraordinary tournament performances ever recorded. Lawrie claimed the WDF World Youth Championship before going on to reach the final of the Men’s WDF World Darts Championship in the same event.
Competing on one of darts’ most famous stages, Lawrie consistently demonstrated composure, scoring power and maturity far beyond his years, announcing himself as one of the brightest talents the sport has ever produced.
World Youth Champion at Lakeside
Lawrie’s youth campaign at Lakeside was nothing short of dominant. He progressed through the knockout stages with confidence, posting strong averages and showing exceptional control under pressure throughout the week.
In the World Youth Championship Final, staged on the famous Lakeside stage, Lawrie defeated Florian Preis 4–2 to lift the world title. His path to the trophy included a commanding 3–0 semi-final victory over Kaya Baysal and a 2–0 quarter-final win against Adam Sepsi, underlining his consistency across the tournament.
Crowned WDF World Youth Champion, the 15-year-old Scot completed a flawless youth campaign on darts’ most iconic floor.
Remarkable Run to the Men’s World Final
Amazingly, Lawrie’s success did not stop there.
Entering the Men’s WDF World Darts Championship, also held at the Lakeside Country Club, he produced a stunning run through a highly competitive field, overcoming seasoned international players with maturity and fearless scoring. His victories included impressive wins over Jason Brandon, Francois Schweyen, and Jeff Springer Jr, before delivering one of the standout performances of the championships in the semi-finals, defeating Jenson Walker 5–2 with a superb 96.33 average.
That result secured Lawrie’s place in the Men’s World Championship Final, a remarkable achievement for a player still eligible for youth competition.
World Final on a Legendary Stage
In the final, Lawrie faced Dutch international Jimmy van Schie under the famous Lakeside lights. In a sensational start to the match, the 15-year-old Scot stormed into a 3–0 lead, producing heavy scoring, sharp finishing, and multiple legs completed in 14 and 15 darts.
At that stage of the contest, Lawrie was averaging over 100, trading big scores and high-quality legs with his vastly more experienced opponent a performance that brought the Lakeside crowd to its feet.
Van Schie eventually mounted a comeback to secure a 6–3 victory, but both players maintained exceptional standards throughout, each posting match averages in excess of 93.
