Ayrshire’s Andy Boulton, former champion in 2011 and twice a previous semi-finalist, won his second SDA Mens Singles Championship, when in an all-Ayrshire final he defeated his county team-mate Graham Ferguson, 5-1, to lift this year’s title.

In the semi-finals Owen O’Neill (Angus) and John McCallum (Greater Glasgow) were just pipped for a final spot and the last eight were completed by Louis Jackson (Central), Alan Soutar (Angus), Stuart Wares (Lothian) and Jordan Soutar (Angus).

Thirteen year old Sophie McKinlay became the youngest ever winner of the SDA Ladies Singles Championship when she defeated Margaret Ferguson from Greater Glasgow 5-4 in an exciting final at the CISWO Club, Glenrothes.

Sophie who plays for East Stirlingshire was 2-1 down but fought back to level the match and then check out on double-tops for the title.  This was Sophie’s first Scottish Singles title whilst Margaret was also runner-up in 2007.

The losing semi-finalists were Caroline McGinn (Lothian) and the 2007 champion Susanna McGimpsey from Greater Glasgow who was runner-up in 2017 and 2018 and who has recently been appointed Scottish International ladies captain.

The last eight was made up by Lyndsey Ward (Renfrewshire), Lorraine Hyde (Ayrshire), Louise Hepburn (Renfrewshire) and Pam Hind (Ayrshire).

An additional feature of this year’s championships, the 49th mens competition and the 43rd in the ladies, was the use of Darts Connect to mark all games and record averages for every match played.  The software enabled spectators at the venue to keep track of their favourites but also allowed people to view players scores as they scored them from the comfort of their homes.  Every score and dart thrown was relayed to their i-phones or i-Pads and every player had the average for their match recorded.

This was a terrific dry run in the new technology as it is envisaged that Darts Connect will be used on all 40 boards during play in the Scottish Open in Renfrew in February when almost 1000 men will contest the title and around 150 ladies will play.

                         WDF Category Gold Event

A to Z Entries Singles      Men    Ladies

Attention all DARTS players. It’s FEBRUARY. It’s the NORMANDY. It must be the WINMAU SCOTTISH OPEN.

This is a WDF Category Gold Event /BDO Invitation Table Category A event for the men, BDO Category B event for the Ladies. This event is open to all players who are eligible to play in the World Masters and the World Professional Championships.

The 2020 Winmau Scottish Open will take place at the Normandy Cosmopolitan Hotel, Inchinnan Road, Renfrew from Friday 14th February to Sunday 16th February 2020.

The Scottish Darts Association are inviting players to enter the annual Scottish darts-fest that is the Scottish Open. This is one of the hardest open tournaments to win as illustrated by the events history showing only two players that have ever won the men’s title twice, Robbie Green, in 2011 and 2014 and the defending champion Wesley Harms who previously won in 2013.

Will there be another Scottish winner to follow in the footsteps of Peter Johnstone (1998), Mike Veitch (2004), Gary Anderson (2007) and Cameron Menzies (2017)?

The Scottish Open was first contested in 1983, held on the same weekend as the World Cup in Edinburgh and was won by 23 year old Australian star Russell Stewart who defeated his fellow Australian Terry O’Dea in the final. The ladies title went to Pat Connaughton from England who defeated Welsh ladies team captain Sandra Lee in the final.

The tournament was then moth-balled for twelve years and revived in 1995 when England’s Chris Mason took the title along with ladies singles champion Deta Hedman, who currently leads the way in the Ladies Open with five titles.

Others to watch out for include Anastasia Dobromyslova with four wins and Lorraine Winstanley with three titles. Ann Kirk has been Scotland’s sole victor in the Ladies event winning twice in1996 and 1999.

Fallon Sherrock has been in four out of the last five ladies finals and would love to finally take the title.

This year’s event will kick off on the Friday night with the traditional ice-breaker tournament, the Mixed Triples, followed by two sessions of Singles play on the Saturday and finishing on the Sunday with the Open Doubles competitions.

The Mens winner will take away £3000 while the Ladies champion wins £1000 and of course valuable ranking points can be accrued to take into the Ranking Tables.

The current champions are Wesley Harms from the Netherlands and England’s Lisa Ashton. Winning duo in the mens pairs were Dogo Portela & Cody Harris while the ladies champions were Deta Hedman and Beau Greaves.

The Friday night triples competition was won by Allan Edwards, Claire Stainsby and Barry Davies.

Visit the SDA Website (sdaentry.com) to enter on line or download the tournament flyer to check full entry details and check out the accommodation offers from the venue. Entry fee will be £16 for the Mens Open Singles and £13 for the Ladies Open Singles.

The Celtic Challenge Trophy was devised to fill a gap in the calendar as several of the Home Nations were not attending the 2017 World Cup in Japan.

The inaugural event was held in the CISWO Club, Glenrothes and host nation Scotland won both the Mens and Ladies titles with Wales runners-up in both and Northern Ireland in third spot.  It was such a popular event that it was decided to continue the championship for an initial three years, thus giving players the chance of extra International caps for their home nations.

The following year Northern Ireland were hosts and the event was held in Newry.  This year again the host nation won the Mens title with Wales taking the Ladies event.

In 2019 Scotland and Northern Ireland travelled to Merthyr to contest the event and true to form the Mens title went to the host nation as Wales lifted the trophy.  The Ladies event was won by Scotland, taking their second title in this challenge.

This year the event returns to the CISWO Club on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd February and it is hoped that home advantage will play a great part in the outcome of both titles.  The SDA hope that a large home support will give the players a fantastic atmosphere to play in and that the spectators will have the chance to see the best of Scottish darts up-close.

Tickets are £15 for the weekend or £10 for each single day and can be obtained by contacting the Scottish Darts Association.

                                       BICC Fixtures 02/11/2019

After collating the results from the first two fixtures of the season it would appear that both divisions in Scotland will be very closely contested this year.

In the North the challenge to Grampian’s supremacy would seem to be coming from Fife as they top the Mens A and are second in the Accumulative Table while in the South its quite tight between neighbours Borders and Lothian although Greater Glasgow top the Mens A.

Central v Highland (16 – 20)

Highland started the day well with a 3-1 victory in the Ladies B with their top player Mandy Anderson winning with a 12.07 average.  The winning set for Central was the best of the match and came from Shiona Arbuckle (12.90).

Central dominated the Mens B with three 25 plus averages and took the match 4-2.  The player of the match was Stephen MacDonald (25.14) for Central with Highland’s top set coming from Hugh Graham (22.95).

The Ladies A ended up a 3-3 draw with neither side seeming to want the points in a match where the finishing featured more than the scoring.  The top set came from Highland’s Sarah Stephen (17.28) with Gayle Maxwell (15.18) the best for the home team.

The Mens A match was a real battle with both sides giving everything and the scoreline leapt back and fore until at last Highland came out 7-5 victors.  Player of the match was Martyn Cameron (26.18) from Highland while James Duncan (25.72) was tops for Central.

Fife v Angus (24 – 12)

From all reports this match had it all as both counties were on top form starting with a 2-2 tie in the Ladies B as Andrea Carr (17.58) took the player award, her average was also the best Ladies B set over the weekend in Scotland, with Roz Brown (15.32) from Angus not too far behind.

The deadlock remained after the Mens B as it went to 3-3 despite some super darts from the players.  Jeff Wardlaw had the top average from Fife with 25.95 while the Angus award went to John MacLean (23.36).

Fife edged ahead with the help of a 4-2 win in the Ladies A although both sides had darts at finishing doubles.  Fife’s international player Chelsea McMahon had a fine game, ending with a 19.27 average while the best for Angus came from Jackie Dempster who took out Fife’s other lady international Steph Gilmour with a 17.69 average.

So to the Mens A and Fife let loose the big guns as they romped to a 9-3 victory over their Angus opponents.  The match was even for the first four or five sets until the Kingdom players took the last five sets in a row for their win and a place at the top of the Mens A, halting Grampian’s 100% dominance.

The player of the match was Scotland captain and Angus manager Alan Soutar with a 28.46 set while Dean Carr’s 27.70 led the way for the Fifers.

Grampian v East Stirlingshire (24 – 12)

Reigning overall champions Grampian started the day strongly with a 3-1 win in the Ladies B and Grampian player Caroline Shearer (15.60) took the match award while East Stirlingshire’s winner was Vikki Swann (13.57).

Grampian continued the winning darts with a 4-2 win in the Mens B and again took the match award through Keith Slocombe (26.84) with Robert Kirton-Vaughan (24.74) best for East Stirlingshire.

The Ladies A went to the same score as Grampian took another 4-2 win to extend their lead overall and international Emily Davidson was in top form to post the best ladies average in Scotland over the weekend with a 23.56, however Sophie McKinlay (21.19), after her heroics at the Youth World Cup, was not far behind for East Stirlingshire.

The Mens A produced another epic with a 6-6 tied match and whichever side lifts the Mens A title this year will truly have to work very hard for it.  This is the first Mens A point that Grampian have dropped in quite some time and as a result they drop to second behind Fife in the Mens A table but continue to set the pace overall.

The best set in the match, and indeed in Scotland, came from Shire player Gary Stone (31.81) with Stephen Buchan (30.36) close on his tails for Grampian.

Perthshire v Tay Valley (22 – 14)

This match also stated with a 2-2 draw in the Ladies B with joint top averages from Tay Valley in Jenni Parsons and Chantelle Jolly who both recorded 13.92 while Michelle Cruikshanks hit a 12.68 for Perthshire.

Another draw followed in the Mens B as the teams shared the six sets with the top player here being Scott Smith Jr (21.47) from Perthshire while Tay Valley’s Robert Brown Jr (19.03) was their best player.

Perthshire took a slight lead after the Ladies A with a 4-2 victory and it was the other half of our fantastic Scottish girl’s World Cup youth side, Chloe O’Brien (20.31) who shone through here and took the player of the match.  Rone Mollison (17.88) was the top player for Tay Valley.

The Mens A match was there for either side to grab control of until finally with the score at 5-4 in Tay Valley’s favour, Perthshire launched their final attack to win the last three sets and take the match 7-5.  The top match award went to Perthshire’s Brian Welsh (26.07) while the best for Tay Valley was David Wood (25.75).

A look across all five league tables show Grampian leading four of them and Fife at the top of the other but it’s all far too soon to be crowning champions with hours and hours of darts still to come before we salute the top sides, but it’s all going to be extremely close this year.

As an example of how competitive the South is all three Mens A matches went to 7-5 and all three Ladies B games were a draw.  Borders top the Accumulative Table with Lothian and Greater Glasgow doing the chasing but it could all change on one single day’s result.

Ayrshire v Lanarkshire (22 – 14)

Lanarkshire battled hard for a 2-2 draw to leave themselves second equal in the Ladies B table but the top set went to Ayrshire’s Kelly McKinnon (16.87) while Kirsty Lewis (12.14) was best for Lanarkshire.

The Mens B also resulted in a draw as both sides settled at 3-3.  Again it was Ayrshire who took the match award as Billy Smith (24.03) had the best game leaving Alan MacDonald (21.14) the best for the visitors.

Ayrshire are one of two counties in the South who have only played one fixture so would appear to be struggling in the tables but they certainly started to make up lost ground as the Ladies A defeated Lanarkshire 4-2.  The top set came from Ayrshire’s international player Lorraine Hyde who’s 21.47 was the top ladies average in Scotland South with Hannah Bell (17.91) Lanarkshire’s best.

The Mans A continued the good work with a 7-5 victory to Ayrshire, also collecting those valuable bonus points for the Accumulative Table, and they find themselves slotted in at fifth in the Mens A table, not forgetting the huge game in hand over the sides above them.

The best set in this match and in Scotland South came from Cameron Menzies (29.84) for Ayrshire while Steve Robertson (28.68) challenged closely for Lanarkshire.

Borders v Greater Glasgow (22 – 14)

The theme of 2-2 draws continued in the South Ladies B matches as Borders and Greater Glasgow shared the points which still leaves Borders three points clear at the top of the Ladies B table.  However it was Greater Glasgow’s June McCallum (16.16) who returned the top average compared to Jade Fraser (13.92) for the league leaders.

Borders pulled out all the stops in the Mens B and charged to a 6-0 whitewash, the only one of the weekend, with the top set coming from Ian Graham (24.29).

Stretching their lead Borders won the Ladies A match 4-2 but Greater Glasgow’s Margaret Ferguson (19.22) took the best set award with Nicola Hogarth (17.93) tops for Borders.

Greater Glasgow bounced back at the end of the day to take the Mens A match 7-5 and top the table after the first two matches, four points clear of today’s opponents.  The player of the match was Paul Sinclair (26.84) from Borders with Greater Glasgow’s top player, Grant McCauley hitting a 25.36 average.

Lothian v Clackmannanshire (26 – 10)

Starting with the inevitable 2-2 draw in the Ladies B match the top set came from Lorraine Moran (12.07) from Lothian while Abi Baxter (11.65) was tops for Clackmannanshire.

It was all Lothian after that with a 5-1 scoreline in the Mens B giving Elliot Hunter (24.86) the top set for the winning side and Gavin Hunt (19.83) the best for the Wee County.

The home side followed this up with a 5-1 win in the Ladies A and a best set award for Caroline McGinn (17.73) while Clackmannanshire’s winner was Margo Smith (12.90)

The Mens A match at the end of the day was a close affair with Lothian just edging out their opponents 7-5 to claim the bonus points.  Stuart Wares (29.39) claimed the prize for the best set for Lothian while Craig Baxter was the top shot for Clackmannanshire with 28.23.

At the end of the day we have Grampian and Borders at the top of their respective Accumulative Tables but plenty of challenges from the teams below them and with one more match until the end of the year it will be very interesting to see which counties will be leading us into the festive break and 2020.

The 22nd WDF World Cup was held in Cluj Napoca, Romania and broke all records with 52 nations attending and competing in the mens competitions, of which 46 competed in the ladies events and 19 competed in the youth tournaments

Bahamas, Ethiopia and India withdrew at the last minute and Pakistan only played in the Mens pairs and Mens team events.

The overall mens world champions are the Netherlands who topped the table with 90 points, just three points ahead of second placed Wales, with England in the Bronze medal position on 73 points.

England however took the ladies title with 132 points, Japan were second on 100 points and with 93 points Australia took Bronze.

England’s youth side were just too strong and won the Gold medal with 229 points well ahead of Silver Medalist’s, Czechia, on 178 points with Scotland third on 161 points.  Read More

The Ladies B match featured defending champions Highland hoping for a good start to their year’s reign but Grampian surged through to win 3-1.  The top set came from Grampian’s Carrie-Marie Duncan (18.56) with Highland’s Meganne Shearer (17.28) not far behind as their winning player.

So after the opening week Grampian sit top of the North Section as usual and Borders have the early lead in the South but there’s a lot of darts to be thrown between now and March and all five league tables will change dramatically over the months.  Which counties are going to produce the shocks and who will be crowned champions at the end of the season?

The recent Scottish Darts Association AGM heralded the end of an era as long-serving Financial Director Iain Tweedie handed over the books to his successor Colin McClements after some 34 years in his role in charge of Scotland’s finances.

Iain was elected to the Financial Director role at the AGM in the Civil Service Club in Perth in 1985 and has remained at the helm ever since and had previously served on the board and was elected Vice Chairman the previous year.

Iain retires with the record of being the longest ever serving Director on the SDA Board.

Iain along with Hugh Gallagher and Tom Frost was one of the signatories when the SDA became a Limited Company by Guarantee in 1986.

Iain jokingly said, “ I was asked to take over from Doug Stewart from Perthshire until a successor could be found and stayed on till now, it’s time to retire as I’ve decided the jobs not really for me.”

In conversation with Iain he confided that his time in office has generally been good and that he really enjoyed the job with more ups than downs and that he wished his successor well in his new position.

Iain’s brand of humour and his vast experience will be greatly missed by Scottish darts enthusiasts but he has hinted that he will be around for a little while and won’t disappear of the scene entirely.

Thank you Iain from all at Scottish Darts and enjoy your leisure time but don’t be a stranger.

BICC Scotland Report Weekend 6 March 2019

The British Inter County Championship in Scotland completed their penultimate fixtures last week and as things stand only one title can be guaranteed as Greater Glasgow are too far ahead in the South Division Mens A to be caught, although in some cases it would take several whitewash score-lines to alter the top of the table order. Things are so close in all the individual league tables and also in the Accumulative Table that it will go all the way to the wire to separate the various county teams with some fantastic matches in store for darts fans at the end of the month.

A feature of this month’s matches was seeing five out of the six ladies selected for the Celtic Challenge and the British Internationals all producing player of the match performances, three in the North and two in the South

Grampian v Perthshire (33-3)

Grampian simply overwhelmed Perthshire as they recorded the highest overall score this season, winning the match 33-3 and confirming their retention of the Accumulative Table title, as long as they do not lose every match to nil against Angus at the end of the month.

Grampian followed the Ladies B whitewash with another in the Mens B as they romped home 6-0 with Michael Thomson (25.23) hitting their top set average.

The Ladies B finished 2-2 with the top set coming from Borders player Helen Hill (14.11), while two players from Ayrshire had the identical average of 13.92, Mary Pentleton and Lorraine Green.

The Mens B went 5-1 in Borders favour, the match being all over at 4-0, with the top set coming from Kevin Richardson (24.40) while the top average from Ayrshire came from Lee Nisbett (22.44).

The Mens A really settled the overall score with Borders stretching their win to 8-4 and producing the top set from Jim McGuigan (28.63) with Ayrshire’s Andy Hastie (26.37) their best player.

Renfrewshire v Lanarkshire (20-16)

Renfrewshire just edged out their close rivals over the four matches and as a result there is still only five points between them in the Accumulative Table as they battle for fourth and fifth place.

The Ladies B started the match off with a 2-2 result the top set coming from Renfrewshire’s Kirsten Gray (16.11) with Helen Beurskens (12.91) the top player for Lanarkshire.

Renfrewshire moved ahead with a 4-2 win in the Mens B and it was Alex McAdam (25.47) from the winning side that took the player of the match award ahead of Robert Baird (23.39) for Lanarkshire.

It was Renfrewshire again in the Ladies A as they took the match 5-1 to open up quite a big lead thanks to a top set from Louise Hepburn (20.31) with Hannah Bell (16.26) the best for Lanarkshire. Lanarkshire fought back hard in the Mens A but their 8-4 win was not enough to pull back the overall score leaving Renfrewshire just ahead of them in the Accumulative Table but the scoreline still leaves the Lanarkshire lads with a chance of second spot in the Mens A.

The player of the match was William Stallard (27.45) from Lanarkshire with Renfrewshire’s top set coming from Richard Baillie (25.47).

The various Sox players won the semi 3-1 giving us a final between the Bellends and the Sox, with the Cleveland trio triumphing 4-1.

Cody’s winning average was 31.71 while Mark had a 28.63 average. The second semi-final pitted former Scottish Open champion Wesley Harms from the Netherlands against England’s Jamie Caven with Wesley progressing 5-3 with the aid of three 180’s and a 130 checkout. The players shared the opening two legs before Wesley took three in a row to lead 4-1 before Jamie pulled the score back to 4-3. In the eighth leg Wes checked out 130 on the bull to take his place in the final, ending with a 28.00 average compared to Jamie’s 25.69 average. In the best of eleven final Wes started well with a maximum in the opening leg to lead 1-0 and checked out 111 in the second to double his lead. Cody fought back strongly with a 119 checkout on the bullseye to take the third leg only to see Wesley strike back to win the fourth leg. Wesley went further ahead by taking the fifth leg with the aid of a 180 and then started leg six with another maximum, going on to take the leg to lead 5-1. Cody then produced three consecutive 140’s in leg seven to reduce the deficit to 5-2 before taking leg eight to take the score to 5-3. Wesley wired a 136 checkout for the match only to see Cody steady his nerves to take the ninth leg and claw back the difference to just one leg. Wesley had another match dart in the tenth leg but could only watch as Cody nailed double sixteen to take the final to a deciding leg. 2013 champion, Wesley hit a 180 in the eleventh leg followed by a 171 to set up double twelve for the title and duly obliged to win his second Scottish Open. Wesley finished the final with a 32.83 average compared to 30.91 for Cody. In the first Ladies Singles semi-final World No.1 Lisa Ashton took on the five times previous champion Deta Hedman. Lisa’s average for the match was 26.04 while Deta returned a 25.44 single dart average. She would be joined in the final by the 2017 champion Fallon Sherrock who defeated Maria O’Brien 5-2. Fallon took the opening leg against the darts with a 76 checkout and Maria levelled the match in the second before going 2-1 ahead with a treble 18/double 18 finish on 90. Despite both players having chances to finish subsequent legs, Fallon took the next four to get the better of her opponent. In the final Lisa started strongly and with the help of a 180 took the leg in 13 darts and despite some lacklustre finishing made it 2-0 after the second leg. The Lancashire Rose was again caught napping with poor finishing as Fallon checked out 112 to pull the score back to 2-1. Lisa took the fourth leg to stretch her lead to 3-1 and then started leg five with a maximum and duly took the leg with the help of a second 180 and double 8. This left Lisa just one leg away from a first ever Scottish Open Ladies title. With a 15 dart leg Lisa took the title to finish with a 28.34 average while Fallon had to be content with 23.90. The losing quarter finalists in the Ladies Singles were England players Roz Bulmer and Kirsty Hutchison with Anastasia Dobromyslova from Russia, the four-times winner and reigning champion along with Tricia Wright who won the tournament in 2001 and 2009. Scotland’s best performance came from Ayrshire’s Lorraine Hyde who lost 4-2 in the last sixteen to England’s Fallon Sherrock.
